On a frigid Sunday evening in January Petals was found at the side of a busy highway injured and confused.  She was bleeding and staggering and was in obvious pain.  Witnesses say she was hit by a car and her head suffered trauma from this.  After much patience and time, Petals was able to be properly restrained and loaded into a car and was rushed to a local veterinarian's office.  And so the story of Petals begins....

Petals made it through her first night at the vet's office.  After bloodwork, x-rays, and multiple other tests it was determined that Petals had no broken bones, but was suffering from a severe concussion.  She had hookworms and was positive for Lyme Disease.  X-rays showed rocks and bones in Petals stomach where she had been eating anything to stay alive.  Her eyes were sunken and she had lost partial vision in them.

Petals had been on her own for quite some time.  She was frozen with fear and would not trust people.  She was so immobilized with fear that she wouldn't stand or walk for weeks.  Everyone was wondering if Petals would ever trust people again and live her life like a happy, normal dog.

Petals spent several months in a foster home in New York undergoing rehabilitation.  While there, she blossomed and began to trust people again.  She started walking, then running and we discovered that she loves other dogs!  While in New York, Petals was able to get lots of exposure therapy and learned to handle stressful situations without shutting the world out.

Petals is now a happy and healthy southern belle!  She is back with us in North Carolina in a foster home where she continues to practice living her life like she learned to do in New York.  She weighs around 45 pounds and and is around 3 years old.

Petals, now known as Hannah, will always be a timid dog.  She would do best in a calm, quiet home without small children.  She has a medical condition called entropion.  This means that her eyelids fold inwards causing irritation, discomfort, and pain.  She has had several surgeries to correct this, and currently is doing very well!  She has some visual impairments, but can see well enough to get around in any environment.

Hannah is a true southern belle survivor and deserves a loving home where she will be cherished!  She must have another dog in the home because other dogs make her feel safe.  She also must have a fenced in yard for potty and playtime.

If you have room in your heart and home for Hannah, please fill out an adoption application from our website.
